Whew I nearly forgot I had wanted to do this for Mother's day for a while now but I kept putting it off. I did it with my tablet, but I really didn't have time to fix the lines like I wanted to so it looks all yucky and sketchy Although the image in the bg is supposed to be sketchy because it's supposed to be a drawing. Anyway, here's the story.
Jade approached Ruby with a book she found that had pictures of everyone from when they were younger (i.e. they're parents and themselves as kids etc) Jade laughed with Ruby, sharing stories about when Crystal, Emerald, Sapphire, and herself were younger. She stopped, however, when she came across one of Ruby's dad's sketches (yeah he drew too XP). It was a picture he did of Ruby's mother Topaz. Jade smiled like Ruby never saw her smile before. Topaz and Jade were best friends growing up, (she was about 7 years older than Jade), and Jade began comparing Ruby and her mother. Ruby felt a tinge of sadness build up in her though. She wished she new her mom the way Jade did. She wished she knew her at all. She wasn't jealous though, just sad. Ruby felt tears trickle down her furry cheeks and she hugged Jade close. "Tell me more..." she whimpered. Jade felt almost sorry for ever opening her mouth, fearing she hurt Ruby somehow. But she kept on, sharing what she remembered about her dear friend.
....aw..... *bricked*
See my grandmother always tells me that I should be happy to have my mother, even if we dont' get along. Because there are some kids who don't know their mom at all...like her. My grandma's mother died when she was born, so I always think of that when Mother's Day comes around.

That's sad. I have both sets of parents so I can't imagine how painful these Mother's Day or Father's Day might be for those who don't have both or none at all. I think this is a really sweet picture though it's a sad one. I'd better finish mine up soon.
Wow...that's very touching. I can see why Ruby's upset some. She never got a chance to know her mother at all. Did Topaz die when Ruby was born?
Either way, this image is very touching, and very fitting for a Mother's Day portait. Even as a sketch of sorts, it's still pretty good. You coloring makes up for how the dirty sketch came out, and overall, I think the dirty sketch adds in a kind of feeling that fits what Ruby is feeling right now - pain, depress, sadness.
This is a very powerful message-of-a-sketch, Jen. And Ruby's mom is very pretty. **Holds Ruby and kisses her on her head** ;3
